From Waste to Wearable: Sustainable Practices for Swimwear Brands

The fashion industry is known for its significant environmental impact, making it essential for brands, including swimwear businesses, to find sustainable alternatives. Upcycling waste materials into functional swimwear is a step in the right direction, aligning with sustainability and responsibility. By using discarded materials, we reduce waste and minimize environmental harm, creating products that are both durable and fashionable.

Waste to High-Quality Swimwear

High-quality Italian recycled fabrics for swimwear, made with ECONYL yarn, offer an innovative solution. ECONYL is a 100% regenerated nylon fiber crafted from nylon waste that would otherwise pollute the earth. This includes materials such as discarded fish nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring, industrial plastics. At ALICIA SWIM we have been using  ECONYL fabrics in all our swimwear to contribute to the reduction of ocean pollution and landfill waste, while offering high-quality and comfortable sustainable swimwear.

In addition to using this innovative fabric, swimsuits featuring shape retention technology ensure that each piece not only fits perfectly but also maintains its shape and elasticity over time, offering a swimwear that lasts season after season. In addition, opting for double-lined products enhances comfort and durability as it reduces the need for frequent replacements.

Another sustainable alternative that embodies a zero-waste philosophy involves upcycling local materials. A recent example is our natural coconut buckle accessories featuring in our KATE COCO Bandeau Top and JODIE COCO One-Shoulder Maillot. These buckles are handmade by local artisans from leftover coconut shells in Mauritius. By integrating local materials transformed into upcycled products, you add a unique touch to your brand while supporting your local economy by collaborating with skilled local artisans.

In the same spirit, exploring BIO-BASED solution made from renewables sources is another innovative approach that aligns with a zero-waste philosophy and demonstrates a commitment to reducing environmental impact. At ALICIA SWIM, we are happy to announce that our 2025 collections will feature three premium bio-based accessories, including our new Coral accessory. These are made with BIOPOLYMER, a durable material composed of at least 80% renewable sources like sugar cane waste, cellulose, and corn.

Sustainable Packaging and Responsible Production

Sustainable practices extend beyond products to packaging and production processes. Opting for carefully selected materials for packaging helps maintain a sustainable identity throughout. At ALICIA SWIM, we choose natural cotton pouches, recycled paper for our labels, and recycled plastic for our storage bags.

If zero waste can't be achieved, striving to make organic products is a good step in maintaining a dedication to sustainability. We've used organic cotton for our short and long kimonos and headpieces. This initiative has allowed us to save 50% less water in the printing process.

Choosing sustainable swimwear supports a broader movement towards prioritizing the planet and the well-being of its inhabitants. While achieving 100% sustainable is challenging, continuous improvements are essential. Learning more about sustainable swimwear practices and their impact can encourage others to join in making the world a better place, one piece at a time.
